Active Shooters :- Watch Active Shooters on Youtube on Fire, The common definition for “active shooter,” among U.S. governmental agencies, is “an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.” Today, this term is used in training sessions that prepare schools and communities for mass shootings. The video that accompanies EMA’s “Active Shooter”, which is a response to the Umpqua shootings, contains footage from one of such trainings. But aren’t all shooters active? The “active shooter” tag is meant to distance the violence of horrific school shootings from the violence inherently embedded in the guns sitting underneath bed frames, buried in sock drawers, hanging from the belts of police officers around the U.S. The phrase fails to communicate the reality that active shooters are everywhere, that they are the result of a disturbing, active gun culture. Within the bigger picture, the phrase “active shooter” is rather blank. EMA’s “Active Shooter” employs that blankness, that bleakness, that nauseating feeling of nothingness, and it sounds like the score to a horror film. Indeed, it is, but the horror is a picture of America in 2015. Umpqua was the 294th mass shooting in the U.S. this year alone, the 45th on a school campus. The haunting industrial clatter of “Active Shooter” is accordingly laced with sadness and dread. Its open white spaces are terrifying, centered on an ominous thud; muted chaos looms frantically, as if nervous scrambling and human cries have been mixed into a single low texture. EMA’s most unhinged.
